What's included in the A3 manufacturing impact for a volumetric mixer fleet?

 Overview

For a volumetric mixer fleet, the A3 manufacturing impact is modeled as a defined share of the fleet's total energy use, covering everything involved in loading, proportioning, and mixing concrete on-site.

How this works

Under NSF's Product Category Rule for ready-mixed concrete (NSF 1112-26), 30% of a volumetric mixer fleet's total energy use is allocated to A3 — regardless of whether delivery transportation (A4) is separately reported for your EPD. That A3 allocation covers:

  • Energy used for loading, proportioning, and mixing the concrete
  • On-site operational transportation (movement of the truck around the site itself, separate from the delivery trip to get there)
  • Lubricants, engine oil, and other equipment consumables
  • Wash water
  • Treatment of manufacturing waste and packaging

A default material-loss assumption of 2% is also applied, unless you've provided documented, project-specific loss data — in which case your actual figures are used instead of the default.
