What standards do EPDs need to follow?

EPDs and LCAs follow a framework of international and regional standards. Here is a plain-language breakdown:

Core International Standards

  • ISO 14025 — Defines the requirements for Type III Environmental Product Declarations
  • ISO 14040 / 14044 — Define how Life Cycle Assessments are conducted
  • ISO 21930 — The global core standard for sustainability declarations for construction products
  • EN 15804 — The European core standard for construction products; required for CPR compliance

Product Category Rules (PCR)

Most industries or countries also add product-specific rules (often called a 'Part B' or PCR) on top of the core standards. These specify exactly how the LCA should be conducted for a given product type.
