What does the GWP in a Bid Report include, and do my mixes need EPDs?

 Overview

GWP in a Bid Report covers stages A1 to A3, from raw material extraction through manufacturing at the plant. A mix without an EPD can use a Mix Designer estimate while you prepare the project, but a declared EPD value should be generated before you submit a bid that requires one.

What A1 to A3 cover
  • A1, raw material supply: extracting and processing the materials that go into the mix, such as cement, SCMs, aggregates and admixtures.
  • A2, transport of raw materials: moving those materials to the plant, or to the material-loading location if you use mobile volumetric mixers.
  • A3, manufacturing: producing the concrete.
  • Can I include a mix that doesn't have an EPD yet? Yes, while the project is being prepared. Use the Mix Designer estimate, and generate the declared EPD value before you submit a bid that requires one.
  • Does the report prove the concrete meets the project's carbon requirements? No. It documents a comparison. The engineer of record, the authority having jurisdiction and the owner decide acceptance or compliance.
  • Check the current EPD status of each mix you plan to include.
  • For bids that require EPDs, generate the declared EPD value before you submit.
  • If any of your concrete is produced with mobile volumetric mixers, A2 and A3 are handled differently. See the related articles.

Together, A1 to A3 make up the product stage, often called cradle to gate. Delivery to the project (A4) is a separate stage that isn't part of A1 to A3.

GWP is expressed in kg CO₂-eq, and the Bid Report builder shows it per cubic yard.

Estimate or declared EPD value?

Mix Designer estimate

Declared EPD value

What it is

An estimate for a mix that doesn't have an EPD.

The declared EPD value generated for the mix.

When to use it

While the project is being prepared.

Before you submit a bid that requires an EPD.

What this means in practice

Using Mix Designer estimates while you prepare lets you compare options and build the report without waiting for every EPD. Before you submit, replace estimates with declared EPD values wherever the bid requires them.

Attaching EPDs

Available EPDs can be attached to a Bid Report when you choose that option. Attaching them is optional.
