How do the finishability, pumpability and shrinkage ratings work?

Overview

Finishability, pumpability and shrinkage are rule-based placement ratings shown for the mix on screen. They give quality control teams an initial indication of how the concrete will place in the field, helping you focus your editing on what matters most for the job and saving time in the design process.

What each rating describes

Rating

What it describes

Levels

Finishability

How readily the concrete can be finished.

Four levels: great, good, low, poor

Pumpability

How readily the concrete can be pumped.

Three levels: good, low, poor

Shrinkage

The mix's tendency to shrink.

Three levels: low, moderate, high

How the ratings are determined

All three ratings work the same way:

1. Starting level. For finishability and pumpability, the target slump puts the mix in a starting level. For shrinkage, the paste content does.

2. Adjustments. Anything in the mix that makes placing harder pushes the rating down a level or more. Examples are gradation outside its ranges and the volume of fibers in the mix.

3. Shrinkage-reducing admixture. A shrinkage-reducing admixture moves the shrinkage rating up one level.

 Using the ratings

  • Treat them as an initial indication. They're rule-based, not a guarantee of field performance. Slump in particular must be reached and verified in the field.
  • Watch them as you edit. They change as you change the mix, so you can see the effect of an edit right away.
  • Check your target slump. Slump is an input to the ratings, so make sure the target in your project is the one you intend.
  • Improve a rating with help. You can ask the AI Mix Design Assistant to reduce shrinkage, improve pumpability or improve finishability. The Workability goal in Enhance moves aggregate proportions toward the Tarantula gradation ranges, which may improve finishability and pumpability.
